Unique Adult artisan learning opportunities in the heart of the fantastic museum in Peterborough located in the Kawarthas, Land of Shining Waters. One Day Capote Making:

January 26th, 2008

Solo paddler in whitewater

Make your very own Voyageur-style Capote from an authentic Hudson’s Bay Company point blanket!
What a conversation piece!  This traditional garment made with a large hood, fringed epaulets and closed with a belt kept traders and explores warm and dry for centuries.  The coat is hand sewn using an authentic pattern at your own pace, and no experience is needed.  Everyone leaves this one-day workshop with the skills to finish their magnificent blanket coat that is both attractive and functional.
When: January 26th, 2008

One Day Ceinture Fléchée Weaving:

March 22nd, 2008

Solo paddler in whitewater

Relax for a day as you learn how to weave a Ceinture Fléchée! 
This distinctive piece of a Voyageur’s wardrobe is made with an age-old technique called finger weaving - a traditional form of off-loom weaving.  With endless pattern ideas and little equipment needed this is a craft that is both relaxing and rewarding.  Using 100% wool every participant makes a belt and starts working on a larger sash that can be completed at home.  Not only will you leave with the basic skills to weave almost any design but you will also receive a booklet containing more pattern ideas.  No experience necessary.

One Day Adirondack Style Packbasket:

Now you can add the perfect blend of tradition and function to your camping gear!
Traditionally made from pounded ash splints, these baskets have long been indispensable to people of the Eastern woodlands. Our one-day workshop is designed for people of all skill levels, and the reed rendition of the pack basket is an elegant, durable and functional backpack.  Work at your own pace in the inspiring preserving skills gallery.  All materials included with tuition.

Imagine your pleasure dipping a sleek black cherry paddle into calm waters early one still summer morning…a paddle you shaped and finished by hand using traditional tools and methods.

Yes, you can do it! Our two-day paddle making workshop allows participants to work at a comfortable pace, developing skills with traditional hand tools such as the spokeshave and wood plane while shaping a new family heirloom.

Come join our skilled craftsmen instructors, Hal Bowen and Don Duncan, at The Canadian Canoe Museum in the Preserving Skills Gallery. Relax and enjoy the sights, sounds, and scent of fresh wood in the museum while you and your fellow students learn the secrets and stories of Canadian paddle makers.

Ideally located in Peterborough, Ontario in the heart of the Kawartha Lakes region with many fine parks and recreation activities as well as many great hospitality businesses that you may wish to enjoy while visiting the Museum.
