The Canadian Canoe Museum benefits Canadians both regionally and nationally. It has the potential to draw thousands of tourists to Central Ontario every year, becoming a major catalyst for development of accommodation, restaurants, complementary attractions and related services. Annual attendance to the Museum is growing exponentially. In 1999, 20,000 people visited the Museum, a 61% increase over 1998. By 2005, it is expected that 150,000 people will visit the Museum each year.
The Museum is perfectly positioned to capitalize on cultural tourism, one of the most dominant and highest yielding trends in the tourism industry. A recent Canadian travel survey indicates that one-third of all tourists are seeking enrichment and opportunities to learn about history and culture. Cultural tourists are known to have a high level of education and income and spend more time and money in an area. The Museum will be one of the most significant cultural and heritage attractions between Toronto and Ottawa and is already fostering the development of complementary experiences (e.g., Kawartha Lakes Spirit Walks).
A member of the Ontario Tourism Marketing Partnership, the Museum was recently listed in the CAA, AAA and Michelin Guides.
Business-like Approach
The Canadian Canoe Museum is unique in its progressive approach to sustainability. It is a new breed of museum that operates outside of government. It is a registered charity with a focused business plan and a variety of revenue streams (activity fees, gift shop sales, admission fees, memberships, local and national fundraising campaigns). The Museum relies heavily on volunteers and places a high priority on forging mutually-beneficial alliances with First Nations, federal, provincial and municipal governments, other heritage institutions, colleges and universities, foundations and corporations.
